homework #6

Practice 10-1: The student center second floor is mostly empty. My friend Sam is talking on the phone across from me as I'm typing this. There are candy wrappers to my left because I have a chocolate addiction. There are only two others in this section isolating themselves to the other side of the room. The elevator is across from me. I can see the tv from here; a sports game is going on.

Practice 10-2: I love going home. I get to see my parents and my friends. My mom makes me all my favorite meals and makes sure I am taken care of. I get to have my car and pick up my friends. We can go wherever we want, but can only stay out until my curfew. It's not such a big deal to follow rules when I'm home because my parents are fair. They used to bother me before, but being home at 11 doesn't phase me as much as it used to. I love going out to eat with my parents and watching movies with them. I appreciate their time a lot more now that I have been away from them. School makes me feel lonely sometimes. I can't stand sitting in my room staring at the computer screen, waiting for something to do. My friends make me so happy and I never feel uncomfortable around them. I could say just about anything and our relationship wouldn't change a bit.

Practice 10-9:
1. Bill ate his lunch noisily.
- "Ate" and "noisily" could be replaced. Also, you could say what type of food Bill was eating. "Bill devoured his lunch like a monster." "Bill ate his sandwich and his lettuce crunched." "Bill chomped on his grilled cheese and he chewed with his mouth full."
2. The union leadership called for a protest.
- "Called" could be changed to a more descriptive word. "The union leadership ordered a protest." "The union leadership refused to cooperate." "The union leadership stood together and ordered a protest."
3. The summer breeze off the water is lovely at night.
- The verb "is" is weak in this sentence. "The summer breeze splashed over the water." "The summer breeze makes the water sparkle at night." "The night summer breeze tickled the water."

#10 p.196: I've been watching her for a while now. All I can see is the back of her head. It's gelled back tightly into a bun. Her slick black her contrasts with her tan skin. Her head bobs back and forth as she focuses on her work. It nods up and down as the girl across from her chatters away. She tilts her head to the side as if she just got out of the pool in order to show her disagreement.

Practice 11-3: My friend Sam likes to burp in people's faces. She seems like an average girl that would know to hold back, but sometimes she can't help herself. A possible conflict for Sam would be if she burped in someone's face and they became disgusted by her. Honestly, I've felt that way before. Her bad habit could contribute to her missing out on valuable relationships.

Practice 11-9:
1. Lizard-green eyes - A lizard blends in with its surroundings but also sticks its tongue out secretly. Perhaps this person is sneaky but hides it well.
2. Moss-green eyes - Moss sits upon a rock. The pioneers used it to locate certain places. Perhaps her eyes seem to remain in one place, like she is fixated upon something.
3. Faded-green eyes - Things with a fade normally have been worn out. Perhaps this person is tired and has focused on the same object with their eyes for too long.
4. Cash-green eyes - The word cash symbolizes greed in her eyes. Or perhaps she is wealthy and even her eyes are associated with her personality.

#2 p.227: I was raised Catholic for most of my life. I attended a Christian school and began to learn about the Bible. When I learned certain stories, I didn't know whether to believe them or not. People at my school were very involved with their churches and strongly believed all of the Bible. They wanted me to do the same, but when I refused, they isolated me. Religion itself is fine, but some people take it too far. Christians are supposed to accept and love others, even if others hold different beliefs and values. Many of these people were following the Bible so closely they forgot about just being a good person. There are people outside of my Christian school who followed the Bible and God, but also treated me with respect. This made me realize religion is totally separate from people's personalities and if they are rude, religion may or may not change that.
